Day-by-day plan for a hair transplant during a 7-night Izmir holiday: why surgery goes last, the first 72 hours, what to pack and the best season.
A hair transplant is minor surgery, and it comes with a short list of rules that do not care whether you are on holiday. The good news is that those rules fit neatly into a normal week on the Aegean coast — as long as the surgery goes at the end. This guide lays out a seven-night stay day by day. A seven-night holiday, with the transplant at the end

| Days 2–5 | Beach and pool as normal — but keep the scalp from burning: a sunburnt or heavily tanned scalp can postpone surgery. Alcohol stops when your pre-op sheet says, typically a few days before the operation. |
| Day 6 — operation | Transfer from your hotel in the morning. Six to eight hours at the hospital under local anaesthetic. Back to the hotel in the afternoon with the donor area bandaged, the recipient area open to the air, and your medication. Quiet evening, semi-upright sleep. |
| Day 7 — check-up | Transfer to the hospital for the check-up and the first medicated wash. Bandage off. A nurse shows you the wash technique you will use at home. Shade for the rest of the day. |

If your stay is ten nights, the pattern is the same: the surgery moves to the second-last day. If it is shorter than four nights, talk to us first — a transplant needs two days at the end of the trip.
Transfers for the operation day and the check-up run from every resort area — Çeşme, Alaçatı, Ilıca, Foça, Seferihisar–Sığacık, Kuşadası and Selçuk. Çeşme and Kuşadası are each roughly an hour from the hospital, so those two mornings start earlier than the rest of the week.
Why the surgery goes last
For at least a month after a transplant the scalp must stay out of the sea, the pool, the sauna and direct sun. Chlorine and salt water interfere with the grafts; sun on a healing scalp slows the fading of the redness. You also cannot cover the scalp with a cap until about day ten, and anything that makes you sweat waits about two weeks.
Placed at the start of a holiday, those rules would cancel it. Placed at the end, they cost you nothing but two quiet days — the healing then continues at home, where it would have happened anyway.
The first 72 hours
- The evening of surgery: the anaesthetic fades over the evening; most patients describe the first night as tight and tender rather than painful. Sleep semi-upright with your head on a travel pillow. Take the medication as written on your post-op sheet.
- Day after: the check-up and first medicated wash at the hospital. Swelling around the forehead is starting; it is gravity, not infection.
- Day three: swelling peaks, sometimes reaching the eyebrows or eyelids, and then drains. Scabs form over each graft. Do not pick.
Contact your coordinator the same day if you notice spreading redness, increasing pain after the first week, pus or discharge, fever, or bleeding that light pressure does not stop. These are rare and treatable — by a doctor, not a forum.
What to pack
- A travel pillow for semi-upright sleep, and for the flight.
- Button-up shirts for the first days — nothing pulled over the head.
- Sunscreen for your face, not your scalp: the grafts get shade, not cream, until your post-op sheet says otherwise.
- A loose, clean cap from about day ten. Not before.
- Your medication list and the post-op sheet, in your language.
Which season
- September–October (velvet season): the sea is still warm, the air has cooled. The best balance between a real holiday and an easy first week.
- October–May: comfortable for healing; less sweating, no beach pressure.
- Winter breaks: mild days, nothing lost by staying out of the water.
- July–August: possible but hard. The first week needs strict shade and an air-conditioned room. The meltem wind makes the Aegean feel cooler than the thermometer says, which is pleasant and irrelevant: the sun on an unprotected scalp is the problem, not the temperature. If you can choose, choose another month.
If you are coming with someone
The rules apply to your scalp, not to the people around you. Partners and families keep the holiday going while you have the surgery and the check-up; you rejoin them in the shade. Many patients come exactly this way.
The flight home
Swelling is normal, and flying with it is safe. Keep your head elevated, avoid rubbing the grafts against the seat, and drink water. İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB) has year-round direct flights to many European cities, with far more choice in season.
