Hair transplant in Izmir — after the city and the coast.

Izmir is not a resort town. It is Turkey’s third-largest city, built around a long bay, with a seafront promenade, an old bazaar and a busy commercial centre. Within about an hour you reach the beaches of Çeşme and Alaçatı, and to the south, Kuşadası and the ruins of Ephesus. So a trip here tends to mix city days with coast days. A hair transplant fits at the end of that trip.

We organise the operation at a Ministry of Health A-class licensed partner hospital in Izmir. You get the same package as in Istanbul, at the same price.

Who we are and what we arrange

Alpha Clinic Turkey is a health tourism agency registered with TÜRSAB. Since 2012 we have coordinated treatment for more than 11,000 patients who came from over 70 countries. A surgeon reviews your photos before anything is booked. After that we handle the date, airport and hotel transfers, medication, the aftercare briefing and a year of follow-up. The operation is FUE, Sapphire FUE or DHI under local anaesthetic, and it usually takes six to eight hours. For techniques and graft numbers, see the hair transplant page.

Coordinators work in English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Arabic, Turkish and Russian, so the consultation, the briefing at the hospital and every later message happen in your own language.

A sample week: city, ruins, beach, then surgery

A typical six-night Izmir trip for our patients looks something like this.

Day 1. Land at Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB). We meet you and take you to your hotel.

Day 2. Walk the Kordon at sunset, get lost in Kemeraltı bazaar, have dinner by the water. Sunscreen on the face, a hat on the head: you want your scalp unburnt when you arrive for surgery.

Day 3. A day trip to Ephesus. Do it now rather than later, since there is very little shade among the ruins.

Day 4. Çeşme or Alaçatı for a last beach day. It is also your last swim for a month. Your pre-op sheet will tell you when to stop drinking alcohol, normally a few days before the operation.

Day 5. Operation. Pick-up in the morning, six to eight hours at the hospital, back at the hotel by late afternoon. The donor area is bandaged, the grafts are left uncovered, and you have your medication.

Day 6. Check-up. Roughly a day after surgery you return for a check-up and the first medicated wash. The bandage comes off and a nurse shows you how to wash at home.

Day 7. Fly home, 36 to 48 hours after the operation.

You can rearrange the first four days however you like. What stays fixed is the order: sightseeing and swimming first, the two hospital days last. A longer stay just adds days at the front.

Staying on after the operation

Some patients prefer not to fly two days after surgery and add a few nights. Izmir handles that better than a beach resort does. From about the third day you can walk gently, and there are covered places to spend the time: museums, the bazaar’s shaded lanes, cafés along the waterfront in the evening once the sun is low. In a beach resort, extra days after surgery mostly mean sitting in your room. Just keep the effort light, stay out of the midday sun and skip anything that makes you sweat hard for about two weeks.

Healing rules, Aegean edition

The full schedule is in our recovery timeline. In Izmir a few points come up again and again:

• The meltem is not shade. In July and August a northerly wind cools the Aegean afternoons, which makes it easy to forget how strong the sun is. Keep your grafts covered by shade, not by a breeze.
• Hats wait. A loose, clean cap is fine from around day ten. Nothing tighter, and nothing earlier.
• Water waits longer. No sea, pool, hammam or sauna for a month.
• Rakı waits too. Long meze dinners are part of Izmir life, but alcohol and cigarettes stay off for at least one to two weeks after surgery.
• Sleep propped up on a travel pillow for the first few nights.
• Back to work: desk jobs typically after four to seven days, physical work after two weeks.

What the first three days feel like

On the evening of the operation most people describe tightness and tenderness more than pain, as the anaesthetic fades. Swelling starts the next day around the forehead and is usually at its worst on day three, when it can reach the eyes before draining by itself. It is harmless and expected. Scabs form over the grafts; they come away during the daily washes, so don’t pick at them.

Get in touch with your coordinator straight away if you notice redness spreading, pain getting worse after the first week, discharge, a temperature, or bleeding that won’t stop with light pressure. All of these are uncommon and treatable, and they need a doctor’s eyes.

Getting to Izmir and getting around

ADB sits south of the city centre and has direct flights from a number of European cities all year, with extra routes in summer. If your home airport has no direct service, a connection through Istanbul is usually the simplest option. We handle the airport transfers.

For the two hospital days we collect you from wherever you are staying: the city, or the coast at Çeşme, Alaçatı, Ilıca, Foça, Seferihisar–Sığacık, Kuşadası or Selçuk. From Çeşme or Kuşadası it is about an hour’s drive. As a TÜRSAB-registered agency we can also book your hotel if you want us to, though you are welcome to keep your own booking.

When Izmir works best

Izmir’s year is different from a pure beach destination’s. Spring (April to early June) and autumn (September to November) are ideal: warm enough for a beach day before surgery and mild enough that the shade rule costs you little. High summer is hot, especially inland and at Ephesus, and the coast is crowded. Winter is cooler and wetter, but because Izmir is a real city, nothing shuts down, and a city-only trip without beach days is a perfectly good way to do it.

Things to bring

A travel pillow, shirts that button up the front, a sun hat for the days before surgery, sunscreen for your face and a soft, loose cap for after day ten. Carry your medication list and the post-op instructions with you on the plane.

Coming with a partner

Your companion has no restrictions at all. They can take the ferry across the bay, spend a day in Alaçatı or go back to the beach while you rest. Many couples plan the coast days together and let the companion keep exploring during the last two.

What it costs

Packages begin at €1,900; where you land depends on the technique and the number of grafts you need. Once the surgeon has seen your photos you get one fixed quote in writing, free of charge, and that is the amount you pay, with no agency charge added later. Flights are booked by you; transfers, the hospital stay and the rest of the package are covered, as listed in full on the hair transplant cost page. A 15% deposit secures the date, and cancellation is free up to a week before surgery.

Izmir or Istanbul?

Medically, it makes no difference. Istanbul offers more partner hospitals and more flights. Izmir gives you a slower city with the beaches of Çeşme and Kuşadası close by. If you can’t decide, mention it in your first message and your coordinator will compare the two with your dates in mind.
