What is DHI hair transplantation?
DHI is a refined version of FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) — the follicular-unit extraction procedure described by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS), the field’s main professional body. The extraction phase is identical: grafts are removed one by one from the donor area with a micro-punch. The difference is in the implantation phase:
- Standard FUE requires the surgeon to open recipient channels with a blade (steel or sapphire) first, then place grafts into each channel.
- DHI uses the Choi implanter pen — a precision instrument that opens the channel and implants the graft simultaneously, in a single motion.
The result: grafts spend less time outside the body (typically under 30–60 seconds), which directly improves follicle survival and final density.
How much does a DHI hair transplant cost in Turkey?
A DHI hair transplant in Turkey starts from €2,500 all-inclusive, and rises in steps as the session grows — never as a per-graft multiplier.

Where the donor area calls for more than a single session can safely deliver, the surgeon plans the case in two staged sessions rather than one mega-session, and each stage is priced from the same table. What the DHI package includes

Growth follows a predictable order. The only stage that alarms people is the one that happens to everybody.

Disadvantages of DHI — what the Choi pen costs you
The Choi pen buys density and control. It is not free, and no method page should pretend otherwise.
- It is slower. Each graft is loaded into the pen individually. That lengthens the operating day and is the reason the practical ceiling of a DHI session sits below a Sapphire FUE one.
- Smaller maximum session. Our matrix runs DHI to 4,500–5,500 grafts against 5,500 for Sapphire FUE. For very wide coverage in a single day, Sapphire FUE is the better tool.
- It costs more. Around €600 more than FUE at every band — the same €600 whether you are having 1,500 grafts or 4,500.
- It is more operator-dependent. Pen calibre must match your graft calibre, and the loading and implanting rhythm is a learned skill. DHI in inexperienced hands is worse than FUE in experienced hands.
- The donor area is still shaved in most cases, even when the recipient zone is not. No-shave DHI means the visible top, not the back of your head.
- It is not a different operation. DHI is an implantation method, not a separate surgery, and it cannot create donor hair you do not have.
Side effects after DHI and when they resolve
Every one of these is expected, temporary and part of a normal recovery.

Call your coordinator the same day if: pain increases after day three rather than easing, redness spreads and feels hot, there is pus or a foul smell, or you have a fever above 38 °C. Those are not part of a normal recovery and want looking at early. Your coordinator is the same person who booked you in, reachable on WhatsApp for twelve months.
Is DHI available in the USA?
Yes. DHI is offered at hair restoration clinics across the United States, and the technique is the same — the Choi pen is an instrument, not a national protocol. What differs is the bill and what it covers. A comparable US session is typically quoted at $12,000 to $22,000 for the procedure alone, with the consultation, medication and follow-up visits charged separately, and per-graft pricing means a larger session multiplies the figure.
In Turkey the same technique starts from €2,500 with the hospital, hotel, transfers, interpreter, medication, PRP and twelve months of follow-up inside one fixed number agreed before you travel. The instrument is the same; what you are choosing between is two ways of billing for it.

Why DHI is considered the newest technique
DHI was developed to solve three problems of classic FUE:
- Graft trauma during manual placement — every touch on a follicle lowers survival. The Choi pen reduces handling.
- The channel-to-graft timing gap — in FUE, channels are opened first and grafts implanted afterwards, leaving follicles exposed. DHI removes that gap.
- Angle and depth control — the pen sets the exact angle, direction and depth of each follicle, which is what makes a hairline read as natural.

DHI without shaving — no-shave DHI
One of the most searched questions is: “Can you get a DHI hair transplant without shaving your head?”
Yes, and DHI is the best-suited method for it. Because the Choi pen implants between existing long hairs without wide recipient channels, you can return to work or social life almost immediately with no freshly-shaved signature.
No-shave DHI is popular with:
- Women who cannot shave their scalp for cultural, professional or personal reasons
- Men in public-facing roles who need to be back at work quickly
- Patients with moderate loss where only the recipient zone needs densification
- Eyebrow and beard work, where shaving is not an option at all

How DHI is performed — step by step
- Consultation and hairline design (45–60 min) — the surgeon analyses donor density, marks the recipient area and agrees the hairline with you.
- Local anaesthesia — applied with a Comfort-In needle-free injector for a nearly painless numbing phase.
- Graft extraction (2–4 hours) — follicles extracted individually with a micro-FUE punch, held in a specialised solution at controlled temperature.
- Direct implantation with the Choi pen (3–4 hours) — each graft loaded and implanted at the planned angle, direction and depth. No channels are pre-opened.
- Post-op instructions and first-night care — dressings, medication, sleeping position.
Total session length: 6–8 hours, under local anaesthesia, depending on graft count.
DHI recovery time — what to expect day by day
Recovery after DHI is generally faster than classic FUE because there are no pre-opened channels — no cavities, incisions or stitches.
- Day 1–3: mild swelling around the forehead, minor crusting in the recipient area.
- Day 4–7: first medical wash at the hospital; crusts begin to lift naturally.
- Day 10–14: most visible signs of the operation have gone; social activities resume.
- Week 3–6: shock loss — the transplanted hairs shed and the follicles rest. Normal.
- Month 3–4: new hair begins growing from the transplanted follicles.
- Month 6–8: roughly 50–60% of final density is visible.
- Month 12–18: final result — full density, natural appearance.
Understanding the hair growth cycle after DHI
After your transplant the relocated follicles cycle through three biological phases. Knowing the timeline helps you read your results correctly and avoid panic during normal shedding.
Anagen (active growth) — Month 4 through 12+: The transplanted follicle resumes producing the hair shaft. Around 50% of grafts produce visible hairs by month 6; full density and texture mature between months 12 and 18.
Catagen (transition) — Brief, 2–3 weeks: Hair growth slows and the follicle prepares to rest. This is a normal rhythm of every healthy hair, transplanted or native.
Telogen (rest / shock loss) — Week 2 through 6 post-op: 60–90% of the transplanted shafts shed. This is NOT graft failure — the follicle stays intact under the skin and re-enters anagen by month 3–4. Patients who have not been counselled about shock loss often panic at this stage; it is expected and reversible.
DHI vs Sapphire FUE
Sapphire FUE uses crystal-clear sapphire blades to open the recipient channels. It is a channel-opening technique, not an implantation technique like DHI — which is why the two can be combined in one plan.

What your DHI quote should contain
Ours names all of it, before you book: the technique, your graft count, the hospital, the surgeon — and that surgeon is the one who operates — the nights, the transfers, the medication, the PRP session, the language your coordinator speaks, the twelve months of follow-up, and one total in one currency. It also names what is outside the figure, starting with your flights.
The line that matters most is the last one: the number on that plan is the number you pay. There is no per-graft adjustment on the morning of surgery.
Can a DHI hair transplant fail?
Like any medical procedure, DHI can produce a poor result with an inexperienced team — which is why the ISHRS patient guidance urges you to weigh the surgical team’s experience carefully when you choose where to have surgery. The common causes:
- Wrong angle implantation — grafts growing in the wrong direction, producing an unnatural look
- Over-packing — too many grafts per cm², damaging blood supply
- Poor donor planning — using the donor area inefficiently, with nothing left for later
- Inadequate aftercare — not following the wash and medication protocol

Can women get a DHI hair transplant?

Who is a good candidate for DHI?
You may be a good DHI candidate if:
- You have stable hair loss (typically Norwood 2–5 for men, Ludwig 1–2 for women)
- Your donor area has sufficient density — assessed from your photos before travel
- You are in general good health and not on blood thinners
- You are willing to follow the post-op protocol for at least 14 days
DHI is not recommended for:
- Active alopecia areata or diffuse unpatterned alopecia
- Severe scalp conditions (psoriasis, untreated folliculitis)
