A veneer is a thin shell of porcelain or E-max ceramic, around half a millimetre thick, bonded to the front of a tooth to change its shape, colour, alignment or size — the American Dental Association describes a veneer as a thin custom shell bonded to the front of the tooth. Done well, veneers correct chips, gaps, discolouration and worn edges while keeping the tooth itself intact.
At the partner clinics we work with, veneer work has one rule above all others: conservative preparation. As little tooth as the result honestly requires is removed — and if your teeth do not need veneers at all, you are told so.
What veneers are
A veneer covers only the visible front surface of a tooth. Because it is so thin, it needs only a minimal layer of enamel removed so it sits flush and bonds securely. The tooth keeps its core, its nerve and most of its structure.
That is the defining difference from a crown — and the reason veneers, used correctly, are a conservative cosmetic treatment rather than a destructive one.
Veneers vs crowns — the honest version
This is the single most important section on this page, because confusing the two is what created the “Turkey teeth” reputation.
| Veneer | Crown | |
|---|---|---|
| Covers | Front of the tooth only | The entire tooth |
| Tooth removed | A thin layer of enamel | A substantial amount, all around |
| Right for | Intact teeth needing cosmetic change | Teeth that are broken, root-treated or heavily worn |
| Reversible | No (enamel does not regrow) | No |
A healthy tooth that simply needs to look better should receive a veneer, not a crown. Grinding a sound tooth down to a peg to fit a crown — when a veneer would have done the job — is over-treatment. We do not do it. Where a tooth genuinely is damaged and needs the full coverage of a crown, that is what a zirconium crown is for, and we will tell you plainly which your teeth need.
Materials: porcelain, E-max and composite
- Porcelain veneers — the established choice. Strong, highly stain-resistant, and lifelike.
- E-max (lithium disilicate) — a premium glass-ceramic prized for its translucency, which mimics natural enamel exceptionally well. Excellent for front teeth where appearance matters most.
- Composite veneers — built up directly from resin in a single appointment. Lower cost and less enamel removed, but they stain more and last around 5–7 years rather than 10–15.
We will recommend the material that fits your case and your budget honestly, rather than defaulting to the most expensive option.
Who is a candidate
Veneers suit you if you have healthy but cosmetically imperfect teeth — chips, gaps, mild crowding, worn edges, stubborn discolouration that whitening cannot fix. For small chips or gaps where you want a reversible, lower-cost option, composite bonding is the more conservative alternative.
Veneers are not the answer if:
- a tooth is badly broken down or root-treated — it needs a crown;
- you have untreated gum disease or decay — that is treated first;
- your teeth are significantly misaligned — orthodontics may be the better, more conservative route, and we will say so;
- you grind your teeth heavily — this is assessed and managed before any veneers are placed.
The 5–7 day process
Veneers are completed in a single visit to Istanbul:
- Day 1 — consultation and design. Examination, photographs, a digital smile preview, and an honest discussion of how many veneers you actually need. Written plan and consent.
- Day 2 — minimal preparation and impressions. A thin layer of enamel is conservatively prepared, a digital scan or impression is taken, and well-made temporaries are fitted.
- Days 3–5 — laboratory. The dental laboratory crafts your veneers while you enjoy Istanbul.
- Days 5–7 — fitting. Each veneer is tried in, the shade and shape confirmed with you, then bonded. The bite is balanced and your clinical report finalised.
Caring for veneers
Veneers are looked after like natural teeth: brushing, cleaning between the teeth, regular check-ups. They resist staining well, but the natural tooth and gum around them still need care. If you grind your teeth at night, a night guard protects your investment. With good habits, porcelain and E-max veneers comfortably reach 10–15 years and often beyond.
Why “Turkey teeth” goes wrong — and how we avoid it
The viral “Turkey teeth” stories almost always share the same root cause: patients who asked for veneers were given crowns on every tooth, with healthy teeth aggressively ground down, no informed consent, and no aftercare.
Here is how Alpha Clinic works differently:
- We diagnose before we sell. You are told which teeth need veneers, which (if any) need crowns, and which need nothing.
- We prepare conservatively. A veneer means a veneer — minimal enamel, not a full crown prep.
- We get informed consent in writing. You see and agree the plan, the number of teeth and the material before treatment begins.
- We design for a natural look. A good result is even and age-appropriate — not a blinding, oversized white. You approve the shade and shape at try-in.
- We document everything. You leave with a full clinical report so any dentist can continue your care.

Safety & standards
Cosmetic dentistry is still clinical treatment and deserves the same scrutiny as treatment at home. The clinics we work with operate in a licensed, hospital-grade facility, use sterile single-use instruments, and are staffed by experienced dentists — your treatment is planned and carried out by a dentist, never by sales staff. What genuinely makes dental treatment abroad safe — and how to verify a clinic yourself — is covered in is dental treatment in Turkey safe?.
Problems in well-planned cases are rare, but we plan for them: you leave with a written clinical report so any dentist can continue your care, a direct line to the coordination team, and clear aftercare. In the rare case something needs attention after you fly home, we review it openly with the treating dentist.
Why Alpha Clinic
Cosmetic dentistry is permanent, so it must be done carefully. Alpha Clinic Turkey has worked in central Istanbul since 2012, and our veneer cases are planned conservatively, previewed digitally, approved by you at every stage and fully documented.
