Beard and mustache transplant is one of the fastest-growing procedures in male cosmetic surgery. Thick, full beards have become a cultural standard — and patients with patchy, thin, or asymmetrical facial hair increasingly seek a permanent solution. At Alpha Clinic Istanbul, we perform beard and mustache transplants using DHI (Choi pen) technique, with meticulous attention to direction, angle, and density that separates a natural-looking beard from an obvious transplant.

If you are researching “beard transplant Turkey cost”, “beard transplant before and after”, “are beard transplants permanent”, or “mustache transplant”, this guide covers everything you need.

What about Lionel Messi and other public figures?

Alpha Clinic does not comment on the procedures of individuals who are not our patients, and we do not perform beard transplants on Lionel Messi or any other celebrity. Public attention to his visible beard transformation has, however, reflected a broader cultural shift: beard transplants are now a well-established cosmetic procedure for men seeking fuller, more even facial hair.

If you are reading this page because of that wider conversation, the question that matters is not what any public figure has or has not done — it is whether a beard transplant is the right choice for you. The answer depends on a few practical factors:

  • Donor area: the procedure uses follicles taken from the back of your scalp. Quality and density of this donor area is the single biggest determinant of result.
  • Pattern of facial hair loss: beard transplants work best for patchy, asymmetrical, or genetically thin growth — not for medical conditions causing active hair loss.
  • Realistic timeline: initial shedding is normal in the first weeks; visible thickening returns over the following months and the final beard establishes between 6-12 months post-procedure.
  • Surgeon technique: direction, angle, and density of placement is what separates a natural result from an obvious one. This is where DHI (Choi pen) technique earns its reputation.

A consultation is the most direct way to know whether you are a good candidate, what graft count would be appropriate, and what to realistically expect. There is no fee and no commitment.

What Is a Beard Transplant?

A beard transplant is a minimally invasive procedure where hair follicles are extracted from the back of the scalp (donor area) and implanted into the face — cheeks, chin, jawline, mustache area, or sideburns. The transplanted follicles take on the growth characteristics of facial hair within 6-12 months, producing a permanent beard in the target area.

The two key techniques:

  • FUE — follicles extracted one by one, implanted via recipient channels
  • DHI (Choi pen) — same extraction, but implantation with the Choi pen for maximum precision

At Alpha Clinic we predominantly use DHI for beard work because of the hairline-like precision needed for natural beard design.

Why Beard Transplants Are So Technical

Beard transplants are harder than scalp transplants for several reasons:

  1. Angle matters extremely — scalp hair grows at broad angles; beard hair grows at very specific angles that change across the jawline, chin, and mustache.
  2. Direction changes in small areas — the soul patch, mustache, and goatee each have different directional patterns.
  3. Recipient area cannot be shaved aesthetically — this makes the work inherently “unshaven”.
  4. Lower density is desired — unlike scalp transplants (where high density looks natural), beards look best with moderate density that mimics natural growth.

A surgeon with scalp experience but no facial experience often produces visibly transplanted beards — the angles look wrong. Our team performs beard transplants as a specialised sub-practice.

Beard Transplant Cost in Turkey

Beard transplants in Turkey are significantly more affordable than in Western Europe or North America. Cost depends on:

  • Graft count needed — full beard typically 2500-4500 grafts; patchy areas 500-2000
  • Surgeon experience
  • Package inclusions

At Alpha Clinic Istanbul, beard transplant all-inclusive packages include: consultation, operation, medications, 4-star hotel, transfers, first wash, and 12-month follow-up. For a personalised quote, contact our coordination team.

Typical graft count by case:

AreaGraft Range
Mustache only300–600 grafts
Goatee / chin strip600–900 grafts
Full beard and mustache2,500–4,500 grafts

Beard Transplant — How It’s Performed

A typical beard transplant day at Alpha Clinic:

  1. Consultation & beard design — the surgeon works with you to draw the target beard shape. This is critical: beard styles are personal.
  2. Donor assessment — back-of-scalp density is checked to ensure enough donor hair.
  3. Shaving — only the donor area is shaved (not the face). Donor shave may be a small hidden strip for unshaven-look patients.
  4. Local anaesthesia — applied to donor and facial zones with Comfort-In needle-free injector.
  5. Graft extraction (1-3 hours) — individual follicular units extracted with micro-punch.
  6. DHI implantation (3-5 hours) — Choi pen implants each follicle at the exact angle and direction.
  7. Post-op instructions.

Total session: 5-8 hours depending on graft count.

Beard Transplant Recovery

  • Day 1-3: redness, minor swelling on the face. Tiny dot-scabs around each implanted follicle.
  • Day 4-7: first wash; scabs begin to fall.
  • Day 7-10: most scabs gone; face looks “stubbly”.
  • Day 10-14: face nearly back to normal appearance. Shock loss begins.
  • Week 3-6: transplanted hairs shed. Do not panic — this is expected.
  • Month 3-4: new beard growth starts.
  • Month 6-8: about 60% of final density; hair can be trimmed.
  • Month 12-18: final result.

Important: do not shave for at least 10-14 days after surgery. After that, trimmers and gentle shaving are generally acceptable, but a full razor shave should wait 4-6 weeks.

Understanding the Hair Growth Cycle After a Beard Transplant

After your transplant, the relocated facial follicles cycle through three biological phases. Knowing the timeline helps you read your results correctly and avoid panic during normal shedding.

Anagen (active growth) — Month 4 through 12+: The transplanted follicle resumes producing the hair shaft. Around 50% of grafts produce visible hairs by month 6; full beard density and texture mature between months 12 and 18.

Catagen (transition) — Brief, 2–3 weeks: Hair growth slows and the follicle prepares to rest. This is a normal rhythm of every healthy hair, transplanted or native.

Telogen (rest / shock loss) — Week 2 through 6 post-op: 60–90% of the transplanted shafts shed. This is NOT graft failure — the follicle stays intact under the skin and re-enters anagen by month 3–4. Patients who have not been counselled about shock loss often panic at this stage; it is expected and reversible.

Beard Transplant Results — Before and After

Beard transplant results are judged at the 12-month mark. Earlier photos show incomplete growth.

Key characteristics of a good beard transplant result:

  • Natural angle — hairs grow in the same direction as native beard
  • Moderate density — not too thick, not too thin
  • Symmetry — both sides match
  • Smooth transition — no visible “line” between transplanted and native areas

See our before and after gallery for real beard transplant cases from our patients.

Are Beard Transplants Permanent?

Yes. Transplanted follicles are taken from the permanent donor zone at the back of the scalp and are genetically resistant to hormonal hair loss. Once they grow in the face, they are yours for life.

Note: you can shave, trim, or style a transplanted beard exactly like a natural one.

Are Beard Transplants Safe?

Beard transplants have an excellent safety profile when performed in accredited clinics. Common minor side effects: swelling, temporary redness, shock loss. Rare complications: infection, ingrown hairs, cyst formation — all manageable and usually temporary.

We use sterile, single-use instruments, hospital-grade local anaesthesia, and a 12-month post-op follow-up to ensure your result.

Are Beard Transplants Worth It?

For the right candidate, yes. Patients who benefit most:

  • Patchy beard growth (genetic or post-illness)
  • Asymmetric beard (one side fuller than the other)
  • Burn scars or surgical scars in the beard area
  • Alopecia areata in the beard (after stabilisation)
  • Sparse mustache or goatee area
  • Trans-masculine facial hair (hormone-resistant cases)

Beard transplants are not usually worth it for patients who can grow a beard naturally but choose not to — that’s a lifestyle decision, not a medical indication.

Mustache Transplant

Mustache transplant is a common Alpha Clinic procedure, particularly popular with:

  • Men with naturally sparse upper lip growth
  • Patients with scars on the upper lip (cleft repair, surgical)
  • Patients who want a specific mustache density/shape

Mustache cases are usually 300-600 grafts and take 3-4 hours. Recovery is the same as beard transplant — no shaving for 10-14 days.

Beard Transplant vs Minoxidil

Some patients ask whether minoxidil (Rogaine) can grow a beard instead of transplanting.

  • Minoxidil — may stimulate some additional facial hair growth, but results are modest and stop when you stop applying. Off-label use for beards.
  • Transplant — permanent, predictable, one-time investment.

For genetic patchy beards, a transplant is the only permanent solution.

Who Is Not a Good Candidate?

  • Patients under 22 years with unstable beard development
  • Active skin conditions on the face (severe acne, eczema, folliculitis)
  • Keloid scarring tendency
  • Uncontrolled chronic disease
  • Limited donor area

Beard Transplant for Scar Coverage

Scar coverage beard transplants are among our most rewarding cases. Patients with burn scars, cleft-lip surgical scars, or trauma scars on the jawline can receive beard grafts placed within the scarred tissue, producing a natural beard that completely camouflages the scar.
