A dental implant replaces a missing tooth from the root up. A small titanium post is placed into the jawbone to act as an artificial root, and once it has fused with the bone, a crown is fixed on top. The result looks, feels and works like a natural tooth — and unlike a bridge, it does not rely on grinding down the teeth either side.
At Alpha Clinic Istanbul, implant treatment is dentist-led from the first scan to the final crown. This page explains what an implant is, whether you are a candidate, the brands we use and the realistic two-visit timeline.
What a dental implant is
An implant has three parts:
- The implant — a titanium screw, a few millimetres wide, placed into the jawbone.
- The abutment — a small connector fixed onto the implant once it has healed.
- The crown — the visible tooth, made of zirconia or porcelain, matched to your other teeth.
Titanium is used because bone tissue bonds directly to it. This bonding process is called osseointegration, and it is what makes an implant stable enough to chew on for decades. It is also why implants cannot be rushed: the bone needs 3–6 months to lock the post in place before the final crown goes on.
Are you a candidate?
Most adults missing one or more teeth are candidates. At your assessment we check three things:
- Bone volume — there must be enough jawbone to hold the implant. A CT scan measures this precisely. If bone has been lost, a graft, a sinus lift, or an all-on-4 design can solve it.
- Gum health — active gum disease is treated first; implants placed into inflamed tissue are far more likely to fail.
- General health — uncontrolled diabetes, heavy smoking and some medications slow healing. None is an automatic no, but they change the plan.
Implants are not recommended for patients whose jaw is still growing, or where a medical condition makes minor surgery unsafe. We will tell you honestly if an implant is not the right answer for you — sometimes a bridge or a denture is the better call.
Implant brands we use
The implant brand matters more than most patients realise — it determines long-term reliability and whether a dentist anywhere in the world can service it later. We place established, internationally documented titanium systems with long clinical track records and globally available components, and the exact brand placed in your jaw is written on your clinical report so any dentist can match it in future. We do not use unbranded or untraceable implants.
The two-visit timeline
Implant treatment cannot honestly be sold as a single short trip. Here is the real schedule:
Visit 1 — placement (3–5 days)
- Day 1: examination, CT scan, treatment planning, written plan and consent.
- Day 2: implant placement under local anaesthesia. Any extractions or bone grafting are done at the same time where suitable.
- Days 3–5: review, post-op instructions, a temporary tooth fitted where the gap is visible.
Healing — 3 to 6 months (at home)
This is osseointegration. You go home and live normally; the bone fuses to the implant. We stay in contact and review your healing remotely.
Visit 2 — the crown (3–5 days)
- The implant is checked, the abutment fitted, and impressions or a digital scan taken.
- The laboratory makes your permanent crown.
- The crown is fitted, the bite adjusted, and your clinical report finalised.
Same-day implants — for selected patients with good bone, a temporary fixed tooth can be attached on the day of placement, so you never leave with a visible gap. The permanent crown still follows after healing.
Single tooth vs full-mouth
The same implant principle scales:
- A single implant replaces one tooth without touching its neighbours.
- Several implants replace several teeth, sometimes joined by an implant-supported bridge.
- Full-mouth restoration rebuilds an entire arch. Rather than one implant per tooth, a fixed bridge is carried on four to six implants — see our all-on-4 dental implants page.
Where a tooth root is still healthy but the crown is damaged, an implant is not needed at all — a zirconium crown restores it. Diagnosis decides; the price list does not.
Recovery and aftercare
Implant surgery is minor. Expect mild swelling and tenderness for two to three days, controlled with standard painkillers. Soft food for about a week, no smoking during healing, and careful cleaning around the site.
The long-term life of an implant depends on gum health and maintenance — brushing, cleaning between the teeth, and regular check-ups, exactly as for natural teeth. Looked after, the implant itself can last a lifetime.
