FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) is the modern standard: individual follicles are extracted one by one from the donor area — usually the back and sides of the scalp — and transplanted into the recipient zone. This is the follicular-unit surgery documented by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS), the field’s main professional body.

How many grafts do you need for Sapphire FUE?

A graft is a follicular unit of one to four hairs, so 3,000 grafts carry roughly 6,000–7,500 hairs. Donor density decides the ceiling: a strong donor area at 80 follicles/cm² supports a very different plan from a thin one at 55, whatever the Norwood stage says. Three nights is enough for a Sapphire FUE case. The schedule is built around your flights, and your coordinator is with you at each step.

Advantages of a sapphire hair transplant
1. Smaller, more precise channels
Sapphire blades can be manufactured at sub-millimetre precision, which lets the surgeon open smaller incisions:

What Sapphire FUE cannot do
The blade is an improvement to one step of the operation. It does not change the arithmetic of the scalp.
- It cannot create donor hair. Your donor area is the ceiling on coverage, and no blade raises it. A thin donor with a Norwood 6 pattern means a plan that prioritises the front, not a promise of full coverage.
- It cannot stop ongoing loss. Transplanted hair is permanent; the native hair around it can keep thinning. Medical treatment of the native hair is a separate conversation with the surgeon.
- It cannot rescue a poor design. Channel quality is worthless behind a hairline drawn too low or too straight for your age and face.
- It cannot beat DHI for density in a small zone. For focused densification or a no-shave case, DHI is the better instrument.

Understanding the hair growth cycle after Sapphire FUE
After your transplant the relocated follicles cycle through three biological phases. Knowing the timeline helps you read your results correctly and avoid panic during normal shedding.
Anagen (active growth) — Month 4 through 12+: The transplanted follicle resumes producing the hair shaft. Around 50% of grafts produce visible hairs by month 6; full density and texture mature between months 12 and 18.
Catagen (transition) — Brief, 2–3 weeks: Hair growth slows and the follicle prepares to rest. This is a normal rhythm of every healthy hair, transplanted or native.
Telogen (rest / shock loss) — Week 2 through 6 post-op: 60–90% of the transplanted shafts shed. This is NOT graft failure — the follicle stays intact under the skin and re-enters anagen by month 3–4. Patients who have not been counselled about shock loss often panic at this stage; it is expected and reversible.
Is Sapphire FUE better for a receding hairline?
Yes. The micro-incisions let the surgeon implant grafts at the exact angle and curvature of a natural adult hairline, avoiding the pluggy, wig-like look common with older techniques. For aggressive Norwood 4–5 cases the front and mid-scalp are often built with Sapphire FUE and the crown densified with DHI in the same session.
Who is a good candidate for Sapphire FUE?
Sapphire FUE is a strong choice if:
- You have stable hair loss (Norwood 3–6 for men, Ludwig 1–2 for women)
- Your donor density is strong — typically 65–80 follicles/cm² or higher
- You want to address a large scalp area in a single session
- You are willing to shave fully or partially
- You are in good general health
It is not recommended if you have:
- A very limited donor area (a body hair evaluation may be the route instead)
- Diffuse unpatterned alopecia
- Active scalp infections or untreated conditions
- Uncontrolled chronic disease (diabetes, cardiovascular)
